Each year, the College of Engineering and Architecture holds its annual Career Fair, providing students with a valuable opportunity to familiarize themselves with the career opportunities, products, and services of participating companies.
Demand is high for our engineering graduates with average starting salaries ranging from $40,000 to $60,000 or even higher.
Among possible employers for our graduates are government agencies, utility companies, telecommunications businesses, oil and natural resource industries, aerospace manufacturing companies, and construction industries.
Depending on the degree that they choose, our graduates can:
- Research and design assistive biomedical products or pharmaceuticals (bioengineering)
- Design bridges and make them safe for earthquakes (civil engineering).
- Develop plans for cleaning up hazardous waste (environmental engineering)
- Work to develop new materials used in airplanes (materials engineering).
- Learn both wired and wireless communications as they become experts in networks, analog and digital circuit design or digital signal processing (electrical engineering).
All seniors in engineering have the opportunity to participate in a senior design project, providing a valuable opportunity to interact with professionals in the engineering field. The project has sponsorship or interaction with industry partners and involves teamwork and hands-on experience on real projects, often with students from different disciplines.
Other possible careers include the following:
- Computer science :programmer, computer systems administrator, software engineer, network specialist, computer graphics designer, or animation programmer.
- Computer engineering: computer hardware, software engineering, or digital-systems design. Computer engineers also develop integrated circuits for microprocessors. Average starting salaries for our computer science or computer engineering graduates approach $50,000 annually. Companies that have hired our graduates range from giants like Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Tektronix, and Boeing, to other mid- to smaller-sized computer enterprises in every computer-dependent field imaginable.
- Architecture prepares you to be an architect in private practice, an urban planner and design, or a social or environmental planner. Our architecture alumni are architecture principals who have made significant contributions on many of the important buildings in the region and nation. They are also historians, teachers, or consultants. Related career possibilities include graphic design, lighting, furniture design, and computer animation.
- Construction management combines the fields of business, construction, architecture, and engineering. Many of our graduates take positions in building construction or heavy engineering construction as project managers or field engineers. Others take positions with employers in real estate development, residential home building, or product sales. They may also work with private or public owners.
