National Academy of Engineering

Election to the NAE is the most prestigious honor in engineering. Founded in 1964, the organization serves with the National Academy of Sciences as an advisory board for the federal government through the National Research Council. Out of approximately 10 million engineers in the United States, only about 2,000 are members of the NAE. The group is composed of engineers from both academia and industry.

Anjan Bose, Distinguished Professor of Power Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

John P. Hirth, Professor Emeritus, School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.

Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)

This is the highest honor given by the federal government to scientists and engineers beginning their careers.

Susmita Bose, School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, 2002. The PECASE citation commended Bose for her “innovative and multidisciplinary research on bioactive bone implants.”

David Bahr, School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, 2000. Bahr was cited for "development of a new technique to determine the stregnth of thin film adhesion that will provide insight into the long-term reliability of electronic components in stockpile."
